MOLES

A mole or nevus is a dark, raised spot on our skin comprised of skin cells that have grown in a group rather than individually. These cells are called melanocytes and are responsible for producing melanin, the pigment (color) in our skin.
Moles can form from sun exposure, but we are also born with them, inheriting them genetically. Although number of moles varies from person to person, fair skinned people generally have more moles due to lower amounts of melanin in their skin, and the average adult has between 10 and 40 moles. Moles can even come and go with hormonal changes such as pregnancy or puberty.
Most people develop more moles on their skin naturally with age and sun exposure, and — most of the time — these moles are harmless. However, we need to conduct skin checks regularly (recommended monthly, especially if you have a
relative with skin cancer, or at least every three months) to see if our moles have changed.

MONSOON AND SKIN INFECTION

One of the side-effects of monsoon, besides waterlogging, is the health hazard the rain brings with it - cases of vector-borne, fungal, allergies and parasitic infections. The worse hits are the children, who are susceptible to viral and skin infections after getting wet.

We should avoid getting drenched and should always carry an umbrella. Even when we are drenched, we must immediately follow preventive measures because if left untreated, it can leave permanent scars on the skin. In case of a skin infection, use an anti-fungal powder to avoid any further infection. Always keep your skin dry. Don't wear wet clothes. Also, wet shoes should be changed instantly. These small precautions go a long way in having a healthy and infection-free skin.Visit  our clinics at Malad,Juhu and Bandra in Mumbai for all skin, hair and nail ailments.Call 9004839333 for appointments.

WHAT ARE PIMPLES AND ACNES?HOW ARE THEY DIFFERENNT?

Some people get one or two spots once in a while, whereas some others get frequent breakouts with lots of pus-filled pimples. If the second sounds more like you, it may be acne – a chronic or long-term condition that affects many teens and adults. Acne is a broader term, and is a more serious condition that is persistent in nature. Also known as acne vulgaris, this skin disease occurs as hair follicles are clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin. They manifest as blackheads or whiteheads, pimples, greasy skin, and sometimes even scarring.
Those red spots that you might see when you get out of bed and wash your face in front of the mirror are nothing but pimples! They are not really an outbreak, but a few spots that pop-up once a while, or during specific seasons. You most likely will experience some pain if you touch them, but try to keep your hands away from them as much as possible, to prevent them from spreading. For all skin, hair anndnail ailments visit our cclinics at Malad,Juhu and Bandra in Mumbai.Call 9004839333.

NAIL INFECTION IN BABIES

·         What are nail infections?
Nails are at risk of fungal infections during the rainy season, especially if your baby sweats and continually scratches himself. Nails can become discoloured, brittle and rough. In severe cases, the nail can come away from the nail bed. You may also notice red, swollen and itchy skin around the nails.
·
H     How did your baby get a nail infection?
This fungal infection can result from overexposure to water, damage to the nail, or scratching sweaty or infected skin. Any moisture or debris trapped under the nails encourages the infection to grow. Ingrown nails may also be prone to infections.
·         What can you do about your baby's nail infection?
Its best to take your baby to a board certified dermatologist.

SYMPTOMS OF SCABIES

The onset of symptoms of scabies varies depending on whether or not a person has previously been exposed to mites. The first time a person is exposed to the scabies mite, it can take upwards of 2-6weeks for symptoms to develop.
This timeframe is significantly shorter in subsequent infestations as the body's immune system is quicker to react (typically in 1-4 days).
Signs and symptoms of scabies include:
§  Itching - this is often worse at night and can be severe and intense. Itching is one of the most common scabies symptoms.
§  Rash - when the mite burrows into the skin, it forms burrow tracks, or lines, which are most commonly found in skin folds, and resemble hives, bites, knots, pimples, or patches of scaly skin. Blisters may also be present.
§  Sores - these occur in infested areas where a person has scratched at the skin. Open sores can lead to impetigo, commonly caused by secondary infection with Staphylococcus aureus.
§  Thick crusts - crusted scabies, also known as Norwegian scabies, is a form of severe scabies in which hundreds to thousands of mites and mite eggs are harbored within skin crusts, causing severe skin symptoms.

Most often, those affected with crusted scabies exhibit widespread, gray, thick, crumbling crusts.Visit  our  clinics  at  Malad,Juhu and Bandra in Mumbai for all skin, hair and nail ailments.Call 9004839333 for appointments.

BABIES AND RINGWORM

  • ·         What is ringworm?
A contagious fungal infection of the skin, ringworm   appears as a circular or ring-shaped rash. It usually begins as a small, itchy, red or scaly patch, and can spread  to other parts of the body including the scalp. At times, several rings appear close together and merge.
    ·         How can  a baby get ringworm?
A baby probably can get ringworm from an infected person or pet, or touching contaminated  toys or clothes. He could have also got it from swimming in a pool or crawling on infected soil in a garden or park. Excessive sweating, caused by the humidity, increases the chances of picking up ringworm.
Make sure to cut your baby's nails to avoid infecting the rash. Also, try to keep your baby's skin clean and dry. Try not   to dress your baby in clothes with synthetic fabric or material that can irritate the infected skin.

EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION ON SKIN

Air pollution has a wide range of sources, the most common include cigarette smoke, dust, smog, and car exhaust. These sources contain tiny particles that can actually penetrate the skin’s barrier and cause problems, including:
  • o    decreased moisture and elasticity
  • o    acne
  • o    dull and dry skin
  • o    eczema
  • o    skin allergies
  • o    rashes
  • o    wrinkles

Air pollution particles can speed up the normal aging process. While loosing some moisture and elasticity is a part of natural process pollution can starve the skin of oxygen and dry the skin’s natural oils. Some forms of pollution can even create free radicals, which can alter the very DNA of the skin cells, leading to cancer. This is what causes additional damage. For all skin, hair and nail ailments visit our clinics at Malad,Juhu and Bandra in Mumbai.Call 9004839333.

COMMON HAIR PROBLEMS IN MONSOON

·         The most common complaint in rainy season is hair fall. Hairfall during monsoon increases by about 30 per cent. While on a regular day you may find 50-60 strands of hair on your brush, but during rainy season this count may go up to 100.
·         Humidity robs the hair of its bounce leaving them limp and lifeless.
·         Dandruff worsens in rainy season as the fungus responsible for causing it flourishes in humid weather.
·         Non-specific itchiness of the scalp and irritation are also common. These contribute to increased hair loss.
·         Lice infestation is also common in the rains, as lice breed during this season.
·         Bacterial and fungal infection of scalp is also common during monsoons. Exposure to polluted rainwater and warm humid conditions encourage growth of Bacteria/ fungus on scalp. As a result, some people develop painful pus-filled boils or severe itchy flaking patches develop over scalp.

FUNGAL INFECTION

Onychomycosis, also called tinea unguium, is a fungal infection that affects either the fingernails or toenails. Fungal infections normally develop over time, so any immediate difference in the way your nail looks or feels may be too subtle to notice at first.

Why Does It Develop?

A fungal nail infection occurs from the overgrowth of fungi in, under, or on the nail. Fungi thrive in warm, moist environments, so this type of environment can cause them to naturally overpopulate. The same fungi that cause jock itch, athlete’s foot, and ringworm can cause nail infections.
Fungi that are already present in or on your body can cause nail infections. If you have come in contact with someone else who has a fungal infection, it may have spread to you.Fungal infections affect toenails more commonly than fingernails because your toes are usually confined to your shoes, where they’re in a warm, moist environment.

If you get a manicure or pedicure at a nail salon, be sure to ask how the staff disinfects their tools and how often they do it. Tools, such as emery boards and nail clippers, can spread fungal infections from person-to-person if they’re not sanitized. For all skin, hair and nail ailments visit our clinics at Malad,Juhu and Bandra in Mumbai.

WHY HAIR FALLS IN RAINY SEASON?

Hair falls rapidly in the rainy season due to the high humidity, acid rain or dirty rain water which makes the hair dry and brittle. If you use chemical color or other hair products, these make your hair oily and greasy due to the excess humidity. This in turn causes damage to the hair and scalp. Using gels in rainy season causes dandruff to the hair which also leads to hair fall.
Try some remedy during Rainy Season
·         Keep the hair dry
·         Use mild shampoo
·         Never tie the wet hair, let it dry completely
·         Use separate, clean and wide toothed comb
·         Use oil to the hair for once a week
·         Do not use hair dryer
·         Maintain healthy diet pattern
·         Drink ample of water
·         If problem persists, go to a Trichologist.

SKIN DISEASES DURING MONSOON

Infections: The commonest of infections during monsoon are facial folliculitis (an inflammation of the hair follicles), acne and ringworm. The cause of such infections is mostly bacterial or fungal. People are more susceptible to infections during this season due to excessive sweating, dehydration, photo-toxiceffects of the sun and, of course, humidity.
Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating: Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition characterised by excessive sweating in the armpits, palms, soles of the feet, face, scalp and torso. Such conditions can get worse during monsoon and lead to body odour and further infections.ffects of the sun and, of course, humidity.
Pigmentation/patchy uneven skin: Hyperpigmentation is characterised by a darkening of an area of skin caused by the overproduction of a pigment in the skin known as melanin. It is relatively common and usually harmless.
Dull, frizzy hair: Frizzy mane is a woman’s worst enemy during monsoon. The moisture in the air can play havoc with your beautiful tresses.
Skin allergies: It is extremely common in cities where pollution levels are sky-high. Commonly affected areas include upper back, hands and feet. Most often cause cannot be ascertained as allergies can have multiple sources.

SYMPTOMS OF ALOPECIA

The most prominent symptom of alopecia areata is patchy hair loss. Coin-sized patches of hair begin to fall out, mainly from the scalp. Any site of hair growth may be affected, though, including the beard and eyelashes.
The loss of hair can be sudden, developing in just a few days or over a period of a few weeks. There may be itching or burning in the area prior to hair loss. The hair follicles are not destroyed and so hair can re-grow if the inflammation of the follicles subsides. People who experience just a few patches of hair loss often have a spontaneous, full recovery without any form of treatment.
About 30 percent of individuals who develop alopecia areata find that their condition either becomes more extensive or becomes a continuous cycle of hair loss and regrowth.
About half of patients recover from alopecia areata within 1 year, but many will experience more than one episode. Around 10 percent of people will go on to develop alopecia totalis or alopecia universalis.
Alopecia areata can also affect the fingernails and toenails, and sometimes these changes are the first sign that the condition is developing. There are a number of small changes that can occur to nails
·         Pinpoint dents appear
  • White spots and lines appear
  • Nails become rough
  • Nails lose their shine
  • Nails become thin and split
Additional clinical signs include:
§  Exclamation mark hairs - where a few short hairs that get narrower at their bottom and grow in or around the edges of bald spots
§  Cadaver hairs - hairs broken before reaching the skin surface
§  Regrowth of white hair in areas affected by hair loss.

BENEFITS OF HONEY

Helps improve skin:
Its anti-bacterial qualities are particularly useful for the skin, and, when used with the other ingredients, honey can also be moisturizing and nourishing.
Is probiotic:
Some varieties of honey possess large amounts of friendly bacteria.
 Heals wounds and burns:
External application of honey has been shown to be as effective as conventional treatment. It is speculated that the drying effect of the simple sugars and honey’s anti-bacterial nature combine to create this effect.
 Helps regulate blood sugar:
Even though honey contains simple sugars, it is not the same as white sugar  or artificial sweeteners. Its exact combination of fructose and glucose actually helps the body regulate blood sugar levels.
Reduces cough and throat irritation:
Honey helps with coughs .It helps in relieving nocturnal cough and allowing proper sleep.
Reduces ulcers and other gastrointestinal disorders:
It is believed that honey treatment may help disorders such as ulcers and bacterial gastroenteritis.

CAUSES OF ALOPECIA

The condition occurs when white blood cells attack the cells in hair follicles, causing them to shrink and dramatically slow down hair production. It is unknown precisely what causes the body's immune system to target hair follicles in this way.
While scientists are unsure why these changes occur, it seems that genetics are involved as alopecia areata is more likely to occur in a person who has a close family member with the disease. One in five people with the disease has a family member who has also developed alopecia areata.
Other research has found that many people with a family history of alopecia areata also have a personal or family history of other autoimmune disorders, such as atopy (a disorder characterized by a tendency to be "hyperallergicThyroiditis,Vitiligo .Despite what many people think, there is very little scientific evidence to support the view that alopecia areata is caused by stress. Extreme cases of stress could potentially trigger the condition, but most recent research points toward a genetic cause. For appointments call 9004839333,Clinics at Malad,Juhu and Bandra in Mumbai.

WHAT CAUSES A SUNTAN AND SUNBURN?

Any time your skin is not protected by sunscreen or clothes and gets too much sun, it can burn or tan. But why do some people get a sunburn and others get a suntan?
You have something called melanin in your skin. It's the stuff that gives your skin its color. People who have dark skin have more melanin. People who have light skin have less.
Here's how melanin makes your skin burn or tan:
  • Your body normally makes melanin to try to protect the deeper layers of your skin from damage.
  • When your skin gets damaged by the sun's rays, it makes even more melanin to try to protect your skin from being damaged even more. That causes the skin to change color:
    • Dark-skinned people usually turn darker brown, or tan, when they go in the sun.
    • Light-skinned people usually turn more red, or burn, when they go in the sun.
Besides tanning or burning, a lot of people also get uneven patches of color, or freckles.

Even if you have naturally dark skin or never burn and always tan, that still means the sun is damaging your skin. And you can still get skin cancer and wrinkles some day.For all skin, hair and nail solutions visit our clinics at Malad,Juhu and Bandra in Mumbai.Call 9004839333 for appointments.
