VITILIGO

What Causes Vitiligo?

The cause is not known. Vitiligo may be an autoimmune disease. These diseases happen when your immune system mistakenly attacks some part of your own body. In vitiligo, the immune system may destroy the melanocytes in the skin. It is also possible that one or more genes may make a person more likely to get the disorder.
Some researchers think that the melanocytes destroy themselves. Others think that a single event such as sunburn or emotional distress can cause vitiligo. But these events have not been proven to cause vitiligo.

Who Is Affected by Vitiligo?

Many people develop it in their twenties, but it can occur at any age. The disorder affects all races and both sexes equally, however, it is more noticeable in people with dark skin.People with certain autoimmune diseases (such as hyperthyroidism) are more likely to get vitiligo than people who don’t have any autoimmune diseases. Scientists do not know why vitiligo is connected with these diseases. However, most people with vitiligo have no other autoimmune disease.
Vitiligo may also run in families. Children whose parents have the disorder are more likely to develop vitiligo. However, most children will not get vitiligo even if a parent has it.

What Are the Symptoms of Vitiligo?

White patches on the skin are the main sign of vitiligo. These patches are more common in areas where the skin is exposed to the sun. The patches may be on the hands, feet, arms, face, and lips. Other common areas for white patches are:
·         The armpits and groin (where the leg meets the body)
·         Around the mouth
·         Eyes
·         Nostrils
·         Navel
·         Genitals
·         Rectal areas.

CAUSES OF HERPES

The herpes simplex virus is a contagious virus that can be passed from person to person through direct contact. Children will often contract HSV-1 from early contact with an infected adult. They then carry the virus with them for the rest of their lives.

HSV-1

Infection with HSV-1 can happen from general interactions such as:
  • eating from the same utensils
  • sharing lip balm
  • kissing
The virus spreads more quickly when an infected person is experiencing an outbreak. Anywhere from 30 to 95 percent of adults are seropositive for HSV-1, though they may never experience an outbreak. It’s also possible to get genital herpes from HSV-1 if someone who performed oral sex had cold sores during that time.

HSV-2

HSV-2 is contracted through forms of sexual contact with a person who has HSV-2. It is estimated that around 20 percent of sexually active adults are infected with HSV-2. While HSV-2 infections are spread through contact with a herpes sore, it is assumed that most people get HSV-1 from an infected person who is asymptomatic, or does not have sores.Call 9004839333 for appointments.Visit our clinics at Malad,Juhu and Bandra in Mumbai.

SYMPTOMS OF DANDRUFF

Dandruff is a common scalp disorder. Exact causes of dandruff are still unknown to the medical experts. While oily scalp is a common factor leading to dandruff, people with dry skin experience the same scalp problem at times. Multiple researches conducted on dandruff have yielded the conclusion that there are various types of dandruff. Causes of each type of dandruff are different. The dandruff symptoms are mostly, visible flakes on the scalp and the hair. Some skin disorders like seborrheic dermatitispsoriasis can generate dandruff as well. The common type of dandruff is known as psoriasis, whereas seborrheic dermatitis is a critical type of dandruff that might affect other body parts as well.
Symptoms of dandruff in hair may depend on the type of the disorder. Here are some commonly noticed symptoms of dandruff experienced by many.

Symptoms of Dandruff:

Itchy scalp:

Itchy scalp is the most common symptom of dandruff. If you have dandruff on scalp, itching might be a regular symptom you would experience. The itching is caused due to the loose visible flakes. These visible flakes are the dead cells that are from the scalp. This common type of dandruff is mainly noticed during winter. Dry scalp is the main cause of winter dandruff. You need not worry when having such a disorder, this goes away with time.

Hair Fall

Hair fall is another prime symptoms of dandruff in hair. Irrespective of the type, hair fall is a common experience when you are suffering with this scalp problem. We generally lose 20-50 hair every day. This is the normal range of hair fall. An alarming rate of hair fall is surely a symptom of dandruff.

Dry and Dull Hair:

Is your hair dry and dull? If yes, you might have dandruff. Dandruff tends to extract the existing oil from the scalp, leaving the hair dry and lifeless. Your hair may appear dull and unmanageable even after proper brushing. You will have to treat this with utmost care

 Acne and Pimples:

Although not directly related to scalp or hair, you might notice sudden outbreak of pimples and acne when having dandruff. Acne and pimples caused due to dandruff have a reddish appearance. These pimples can be painful too. Many people with problem of pimples have gotten rid of it only after getting rid of dandruff.

Constipation and Irritable Bowel Syndrome:

Some studies have shown that dandruff may be the cause of chronic constipation and irritable bowel syndrome. Although the reasons are still unexplained, it is a common experience felt by many people having dandruff.

WHEN TO SHAMPOO YOUR HAIR?

No matter how frequently you shampoo, your scalp produces the same amount of oil. Cutting back on shampooing will have no effect on your sebaceous glands; genetics and hormones determine the amount of oil they produce. But it will cause dirt and oil to accumulate on your scalp and hair follicles, and could cause inflammation and irritation that might stunt hair growth. How often you wash your hair is a personal decision. Wash your hair with a moisturizing shampoo when you feel you need it, whether that’s daily or weekly. Or if you like making shampoo mohawks.

PREPARATION FOR PLAYING HOLI

Checklist:

Must-haves before Holi:
A bottle of oil (Coconut/ Sesame/ Mustard/ Olive)
Nail Polish (Colored or clear)
Petroleum Jelly (Vaseline)
Pair of spectacles, no contact lenses please
Protect your skin and hair

It is extremely important to apply at least two generous layer of oil to your hair and scalp, face, neck, shoulders, arms, legs and any exposed area of your body, especially the insides of your ears and navel, and the area between fingers and toes. Make sure you moisturize your lips as well. I recommend coconut, olive, mustard or sesame (til) oil. Applying oil will help get the color off easily when you bathe after Holi. It will also protect your skin and hair from dryness, fizziness, roughness and irritation.

Girls, make sure you tie your hair after applying oil. Braid it or tie it into a bun to protect them from getting damaged in case someone pulls them while playing Holi.

Guys, don’t shave for 2-3 days before Holi. This would protect your pores from color granules and chemicals.

For any skin, hair and nail ailment visit our clinics at Malad,Juhu and Bandra .For appointments call 9004839333.

ALLERGIES

Allergies are among the most common chronic conditions worldwide. Allergy symptoms range from making you miserable to putting you at risk for life-threatening reactions.
An allergic reaction begins in the immune system. Our immune system protects us from invading organisms that can cause illness. If you have an allergy, your immune system mistakes an otherwise harmless substance as an invader. This substance is called an allergen. The immune system overreacts to the allergen by producing antibodies. These antibodies travel to cells that release chemicals, causing an allergic reaction.
A number of different allergens are responsible for allergic reactions. The most common include:
•    Pollen
•    Dust
•    Food
•    Insect stings
•    Animal dander
•    Mold
•    Medications
•    Latex

We have different allergy profiles to detect the type of allergy and its severity.Allergy is done by blood test.If you know your allergy you can easily avoid it.If you want your allergy profile to be done please contact us on 9004839333.Our clinics at Malad,Juhu and Bandra in Mumbai.

HIV AND AIDS

What Is AIDS?

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. AIDS is the most advanced stage of HIV infection.
HIV causes AIDS by attacking CD4 cells, which the immune system uses to protect the body from disease. When the immune system loses too many CD4 cells, you are less able to fight off infection and can develop serious, often deadly, infections. These are called oppurtunistic infections(OIs).
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIV AND AIDS?
When someone dies of AIDS, it is usually OIs or other long-term effects of HIV that cause death. AIDS refers to the weakened state of the body’s immune system that can no longer stop opportunistic infections.
You do not have AIDS as soon as you are infected with HIV. You can live with HIV (be HIV+) for many years with no signs of disease, or only mild-to-moderate symptoms. People living with HIV and taking HIV drugs as prescribed have a very low risk of progressing to AIDS. But without treatment, HIV will eventually wear down the immune system in most people to the point that they have low numbers of CD4 cells and develop opportunistic infections. Without treatment, this usually happens in five to ten years.
The definition of AIDS was established before there was effective treatment for HIV. It indicated that a person was at higher risk for illness or death. In countries where HIV treatment is readily available, AIDS is no longer as relevant as it once was. This is because having access to effective treatment means people can stay healthier even with low CD4 counts. Also, someone could have received the AIDS diagnosis years ago even though they no longer have a low CD4.
